The star mage is the leader of the mages and the guiding light for the rest of the mages. Their magic can bring out other mage's potential. They do this through their ability to travel into their dreams. The soul is the most honest when it’s asleep so star mages can dive into the heart of each mage to understand how to bring out their potential. Once they have made that connection, they can then use their star magic in the waking world to resonate with those feelings, and bring out the potential in their magic. This works specifically with the other mages because their souls are tied to their magic and resonate with their feelings. While it was not meant to work with others I'm always open to the fun possibility with different worlds and I will gladly adjust according to how others want to play with this ability.

I will only use this ability with player permission. If you are interested please let me know. Starting over at 20 was also a personal choice he made as a tribute to his fallen world as well as a way to adjust to the Earth's calendar)
AU Description: n/a
OU Backstory: Sirius comes from a steampunk desert world, Althiya, where magic was created from humanity's desire for there to be something after death. Eight mages are chosen to be given magic, each one wielding a different element that carries a piece of that original wish. Sirius is the star mage. His magic comes from the promise that there is something after the darkness of death and he's the guiding light and leader of the mages. He has a quiet kind of charisma that inspires loyalty, although he doesn't share that confidence in himself. Underneath the mask of the strong leader he strives to be, he's a quiet bookworm who struggles under the high expectations everyone has of him. He doesn't feel worthy of his title but he still strives to be the leader everyone needs him to be, even at the expense of his own mental wellbeing.

Sirius's father was the last star mage, so he was born into a very luxurious, and sheltered life. His mother and father always seemed a bit distant and as a kid Sirius tried to live up to his father's shining example. As he grew older, his father's blinding light grew harsher, and Sirius felt like he could never live up to it. He started to suffer from panic attacks, which he hid from everyone because that would only prove how weak he truly was. He continued to secretly sink under his low self-confidence with books his only escape, while he pretended to be the strong son who would be worthy of his father in public. To his horror, he was chosen as the next star mage, which only made the chasm between him and his father worse.

It was a turbulent time for an inexperienced, young leader. For the first time a commoner, Altair, was chosen as a mage. Sirius struggled to find his voice against his scheming advisors who preyed on his insecurities, but he managed to rise above them and was working for a better future when disaster struck. His father destroyed their world, with Sirius’s own magic, and Sirius and the other mages had to flee to another world, Earth, which seemed to have a hidden connection to their world.

After a relatively peaceful year with a young woman, Skylar, who took the mages in, Sirius and his friends were tracked down and hunted by the remnants of the ancient order that exiled the mages to Althiya in the past. They learned the hidden truth about their magic, that their magic is slowly damaging the world around them, and they will potentially destroy the world someday just by existing. This was why Sirius's father destroyed Althiya. He was trying to break the cycle of mages by making sure no one was left alive to become the next mage. By escaping that night, Sirius and his friends unknowingly ruined that plan and Althiya was sacrificed in vain.

Sirius and his friends were devastated by the truth and yet they still want to live despite their catastrophic existence. They continue to fight for their right to exist, a fight that has already cost him his world and two of his friends.

Powers and Abilities:

Mage – Sirius looks human but when he was chosen as a mage, he was transformed into a being of magic that is tied to his human soul. Sirius’s magic feeds on the world’s residual magical energy, just like how humans breathe air. Using magic drains his magic reserves and temporarily weakens his magical core, but building up too much magic can damage his human body. It’s a delicate balance and the strength of his magic is directly tied to how strong his magical energy is.

Magic is complicated in his world. It comes from a different realm and as such, it can’t exist in the real world without being tethered to a human otherwise it would be catastrophic. When mages are chosen, they slowly are transformed into a being of pure magic energy wrapped around an echo of their human self. This allows magic to work past some of the limitations of the human body while also being contained. Mages are greatly enhanced by their magic and stand above normal humans. However, they still must work within the confines of what their physical vessel can withstand. For example, the water mage could create a powerful wave of water, but not a tsunami without severely damaging their human body.

Due to their transformation, mages no longer feel human. They are similar to corpses that are kept alive by magic but their magic gives the illusion that they are still human. All magic is fueled by imagination and mages can use their memories of being human to feel like one again, although it doesn't feel quite real, their senses feel more like looking back at the memory their imagination recreated. Sirius's soul naturally leans towards his magic and it takes a conscious effort to switch back to his human memories. Also, when Sirius's soul resonates with his magic side, the magical energy is strongest around his eyes and they glow. He can use his magic without going full mage mode, but extreme emotions are more likely to make him resonate with his magical side. Think of it as tug of war with his consciousness with an ethereal pull towards his magic. When his consciousness is pulled over to his magic side completely, usually with extreme emotions, his human senses are dimmed, like how it would feel if you saw something out of the corner of your eye. This allows mages to ignore the limitations of their body temporarily, such as pain and fatigue. Their body still feels the strain even if they can’t feel it.

Resistance and minor healing – Mages cannot survive without their human vessel and his magic keeps their human body alive and boosts their body with magical energy. Mages don’t need to eat or sleep as much as humans, they don’t get sick, they have a higher tolerance for alcohol and drugs, and they heal faster than normal humans. They can still get injured, but it takes less time to recover. An injury that takes a week or more to recover would only take them a few days. However, if a mage’s magic reserves are low, then there is no extra energy for the magical boost.

Magical Defense mechanism- If his magic gets too low or his magic has to adjust due to outside magical influences, Sirius’s magical form will take over, shapeshifting him into a small animal form. It’s a defense mechanism that allows the magic to focus all its energy on magic recovery. Sirius turns into big black cat with starry fur and ethereal wings that glow. When he's in his cat form, he can 'blink' short distances. It looks like teleportation but in reality he’s moving too fast to see.

Star Magic - Mages use imagination to give the pure magic they are made up of a physical shape. Each mage controls a different element. Sirius can shape his magic into starry light. His magic isn't just light, it also holds the raw energy, and speed of the stars as well, making it more difficult to control. He can also shape his magic into starlight to use a weapon but if he doesn’t dismiss it quick enough, it can get away from him and create an explosion of raw star energy, the size of the explosion would depend on the size of the magic he used. He can't sustain his magic for very long, but he can also imbue his body with the speed of the stars for a short amount of time, giving him inhumanly fast reflexes temporarily.

Once they have made that connection, they can then use their star magic in the waking world to resonate with those feelings and bring out the potential in their magic. (This works specifically with the other mages because their souls are tied to their magic and resonate with their feelings. While it was not meant to work with others, I'm always open to the fun possibility. Sirius is also very new to this ability since it was hidden from him, and he has only used it a couple times.)

Desired Faction: My first choice is Elysium. Sirius would choose to stay as a servant so he can make it easier for others to escape and Elysium has a direct connection to the Empire. I don’t know how long I will keep him as a servant though, it depends on how well it works oocly, so Flotsam would be my second choice for when he finally escapes.

SAMPLES

Interview Sample

Have you ever lost a comrade? How did you react?

[The sudden bright flash of Sirius’s starry eyes answered the question even before he spoke.]

I have. Twice, although they were more than comrades, more like family.

[His glowing eyes narrowed with a hesitant flicker as he struggled to put his emotions into words.]

I...didn’t handle it well. I lost control of my magic and people were hurt.

[He wished that was all but the way the glow from his eyes suddenly dimmed with a uneasy flicker hinted at something else. He couldn’t want to drag Eclipse into this though. He had hurt him enough by forcing his heartbreak and regret on him when he was born that day.]

How do you handle orders from a superior officer?

[His starry eyes flashed brighter. By the goddess he would love to have someone else lead! He couldn’t possibly show how relieved the thought made him though and his eyes quickly dimmed back down as he answered politely.]

I wouldn’t mind following someone with more experience and status in the slightest. I would respect their decisions and do my best to obey them.

If a superior officer orders you to do something you believe is morally wrong, what would you do?

[This was a difficult question and Sirius had to consider it carefully before his answered with a heavy sigh.]

Sometimes the situation requires us to put our personal feelings aside.

[It was said in a monotone voice that suggested that this was a burden Sirius was very familiar with. It was easier to deal with these kinds of possibilities with his mentality as a mage, the divine protectors of his world. Or at least, that is what they had been led to believe. The truth was cruel, which is why he continued. The uncertain flicker in his eyes hinted at his hesitation, however the glow became steadily brighter, along with his determination grew as he spoke.]

It also depends on the severity of the morally wrong action. War is never clean but for more severe cases, like taking a life for example, if there truly was no other choice then I would obey the order obediently. However, if there was another way then I would implore my superior officer to at least consider it.

[If it involved the lives of others then he may even disobey orders if they don’t. He kept those insubordinate thoughts to himself.]

When is it appropriate to take a life?

[Again his answer had the same practiced tone as before, as if he was reciting an oath. His glowing eyes hardly flickered at all as he spoke.]

When other lives are at stake.

Many Crimson Corsairs will die in the line of duty, how does that make you feel?

[The practiced confidence which Sirius hid behind wavered with that question and the soft flicker in his glowing eyes mirrored his unease.]

To be honest, I don’t want to lose anyone else, and I will do everything within my power to stop that from happening again. I know that it is foolish to think that I can save everyone, but still. I suppose I can be stubborn sometimes.

Many Crimson Corsairs must serve Imperials to preserve our cover and gather resources. How do you feel about this?

[Suddenly the weight of time he had spent as a servant so he could help others escape crashed down on him. The starry glow in his eyes looked as tired as he felt. He quickly stifled his exhausted chuckle and turned it into a clumsy hum.]

If that’s what it takes. If I can help others, then it would be worth it.

[It was the same thing he had told him countless times when his foolish plan became too much, and he meant every word. His magic had already cost too many people their lives. This was the least he could do.]

What are your dreams for the future?

[Sirius’s starry eyes flashed brighter with a clear look of surprise.]

Dreams?

[After everything that he had been through, both back and here, the question caught him completely off guard.]

Sorry, I’ve haven’t really thought about it.

[Did someone like him, who doomed his world even have the right to? The violent flickering in his eyes hinted at his inner turmoil that he desperately tried to keep out of his expression.]

Well I do have one for this world. A future without the servant gate or the Empire so everyone here can live happily.

Describe a success in your past and what you learned from it.

[Sirius had a nervous habit of fiddling with the edges of the pages of the book he was reading. Even when he didn’t have a book with him he fell into this habit and he fiddled with the pages of his invisible book with a slight frown. His starry eyes dimmed with a faint flicker.]

I’m not sure you could call it a success since I wasn’t able to achieve my goal completely before...I came here.

[Part of that was true although a lot happened in between that he wasn’t talking about, but moving on before he lost his courage to continue.]

When I was chosen as the star mage and expected to lead the mages I had no idea what to do. My first challenge was Altair, my best friend, although not at the time. I didn’t know him back then. He was the first commoner to be chosen as a mage and the decision caused a huge uproar. I’m ashamed to say I turned my back on him and trusted my advisors to handle the situation. I didn’t know they locked him up until later. He went missing and no one was lifting a finger to find him, almost like they were happy he had disappeared. It was difficult, but I stood up to my advisors and mobilized the court just in time. If I hesitated any longer Altair might have been dead when we found him. It’s my biggest regret but it also showed me that I didn’t have to be ruled by my doubts, and maybe I could be the leader everyone deserves.

[He still struggled sometimes, maybe more then just sometimes if he was being really honest but the memory of saving Altair was a precious memory that he held onto whenever his confidence shattered.]

What would you be willing to do if it meant the defeat of the Empire?

[All his anger towards the Empire that he repressed so he could survive here bubbled over in quiet answer.]

Whatever it takes.

[The steady, bright glow from his eyes suddenly flickered as if he had regained his senses. That sounded like something Eclipse would say not him. Or was it? When he thought of everything he had lost he didn’t regret his answer.]

How well do you work with comrades? What can we expect from you when you are placed on a team?

[Sirius answered with a faint smile as he thought about his friends back home.]

I prefer to work with others.

[He felt empty without the others here and his eyes softly burned brighter with his immense loneliness before he pushed his sadness down so he could answer the question.]

I’m a good negotiator and strategist, as well as a powerful mage who is experienced in combat.

[This question should be easy and his starry eyes flickered as he inwardly cursed at how quickly his low confidence tried to sabotage his answer.]

comments

As the star mage, Sirius's magic holds the promise of a guiding light in the darkness.

<details style="width:100%; margin-top: 2em;">

→ History

World History

Sirius's story takes place in a version of Earth which loosely follows history but with a magical twist. Human's imagination and fear of the afterlife created a magical entity. The nameless goddess that was born from that loneliness wanted to be a part of the world that created her so she tore a hole in her dimension and gave humanity a piece of her magic. Over time, people grew to fear magic and its potential to destroy the world if it escaped the other dimension completely. Around the Victorian era, an order dedicated to protecting mankind found an ancient portal and banished the current mages and their supporters to Althiya, a desert world with aimlessly floating islands in a sea of sand. The mages magic awakened hidden crystals that allowed them to stabilize the islands and stop them from wandering.

At first, everyone worked together to stabilize Althiya but the other exiles slowly grew to resent the mages for their banishment and they worked with the locals to imprison the mages, in an attempt to control the disastrous magic that was slowly eating away at their world. When a mage died, a witch hunt was conducted to find the next mage and lock them up. This dark chapter of Althiyan history lasted for many years until the mages finally revolted and slaughtered everyone that tried to oppose them. They created a bloody tyranny and formed the noble houses to rule over the powerless people that imprisoned them. After a unexpected truce, everyone agreed to bury this dark chapter of Althiya’s history. However, there is still a strong sense of resentment towards the commoners among the nobles and fear of crossing the nobles for the common people, it’s just wrapped in layers of arrogance (the nobles believing they are better suited to rule than the weak common people), and a fear of change destroying what they have built for the common people.

Fast-forward to the modern day and no one knows the dark truth about the mages or their bloody history. Althiya is now a mix of the original nomadic culture and an oppressive steampunk-like ruling noble class who are the descendants of the first mages, with seven mages at the top who are chosen by the nameless goddess as divine protectors.

Sirius was chosen the the next star mage, and leader of the mages. A few years after he is chosen, Althiya is destroyed, and he and the other mages flee through the same portal the exiled mages went through. They find themselves on Earth during modern day, where they are hunted by the remnants of the ancient order that exiled the mages.

Character History

Sirius was considered an unlucky child. He was born during a missing year, a rare phenomenon on his world where the moon disappears for year. Children are only named after forming a life bond with someone who has died. Those who die during a missing year are considered unlucky since they do not have the moon's guidance, however Sirius's father chose to have Sirius form a bond with one of the unlucky dead instead of holding out for the moon's return. He cared deeply for the people of Althiya and refused to let the the one who died to be left without a bond and become Forsaken. He proudly proclaimed that his son would be strong enough carry the burden of the unlucky bond. This belief has both tormented and empowered Sirius all his life.

Sirius's father was was last star mage so he was born into a very luxurious, and sheltered life. His mother and father always seemed a bit distant and as a kid Sirius tried to live up to his father's shining example. As he grew older, his father's blinding light grew harsher and Sirius felt like he could never live up to it. He started to suffer from panic attacks, which he hid from everyone because that would only prove how weak he truly was. He continued to secretly sink under his low self confidence with books his only escape, while he pretended to be the strong son who would be worthy of his father in public.

To his horror, he was chosen as the next star mage, which only made the chasm between him and his father worse. It was a turbulent time for an inexperienced, young leader too. For the first time a commoner, Altair, was chosen as a mage. No one knew what to do with him. It was too much for Sirius to handle and he's ashamed to admit that he let his advisors handle the situation. They imprisoned Altair, seemingly to protect him from those who would want to hurt him. Sirius knew that was a lie but he didn't have the courage to go against all the nobles so he quietly went along with it, and he kept his distance from Altair because he couldn't face him.

However when Altair went missing Sirius found his voice. He confronted his advisors and worked with the other mages to find Altair before it was too late. It was the first time he acted like a leader. It was terrifying but Altair was in danger. That thought overshadowed his doubts and a hint of the inspiring leader he had the potential for shone through. Luckily they found Altair in time, but he was severely injured, and it had cost him his right eye. Sirius begged Altair's forgiveness, admitting his weakness and promising that he would never turn away from him again.

True to his word Sirius continued to fight against the nobles hatred towards Altair, despite the many whispers that he was a disappointment for taking a commoner's side. It was a hard road but with Altair, who had become his closest friend and confidant, and the other mages at his side, he felt like he could chance the noble's minds.

Before he could realize his dream, disaster struck and Sirius's father used Sirius's own magic, which he had been secretly siphoning from him, to destroy Althiya. Sirius and the other mages barely escaped. They had to flee through the same portal the exiled mages went through, which until then, none of them knew it existed. Sirius was devastated by his father's betrayal and his last words calling Sirius and the other mages monsters haunted him.

Once again he felt overwhelmed and paralyzed with indecision. He should lead the others but he was so shaken by everything and had no idea what to do next. With the help of a young woman named Skylar, who saw the mages in a dream, they were able to adapt to their new world. They all made a vow to never forget Althiya and even changed their birthday to the day Althiya was destroyed as a tribute to their fallen home.

Sirius liked Earth. He didn't feel the oppressive need to be the leader here. They could all just be themselves and Skylar became a part of their broken family. Unfortunately it didn't last. They were tracked down and hunted by the remnants of the ancient order that exiled the mages. They learned the hidden truth about their magic, that their magic is slowly damaging the world around them and they will potentially destroy the world someday just by existing, which was why the last star mage, Sirius's father, destroyed Althiya. He was trying to break the cycle of mages by making sure no one was left alive to become the next mage. By escaping that night, Altair and his friends unknowingly ruined that plan and Althiya was sacrificed in vain.

The truth made Sirius's low self worth crash to an extreme low. Not only was he worthless, but he was also a monster? He could understand why his father acted the way he had, but at the same time, he still wanted to live with everyone.

There was a huge debate on what to do with the soldier they captured, who had told them this damming information. Sirius wanted to let them go as a show of good faith and to prove they weren't the monsters the order thought they were. Altair led the other side, saying it was too dangerous. In the end Sirius managed to convince him. His choice had dire consequences. The soldier turned on them and Altair was taking captive by the Order. Arrakis died when they went to rescue him, and Skylar, who turned out to be the secret eight mage tried to reason with the Order, only to be killed.

The loss broke Sirius and his magic went out of control. His friends were able to stop him but little did he know, the nameless goddess took advantage of his destructive explosion of power to harness some of it for her own goals.

Skylar's death wasn't completely in vain. Some of the higher ups were dissatisfied with how their agents acted and moved by Skylar's sacrifice so they created a shaky truce with the mages. The Order would not harm the mages while they searched for the new air and music mages, Arrakis and Skylar's successors. Depending on how the mages behaved during that time, they may be willing to consider other options. It was hardly a fair deal but Sirius couldn't stand losing anyone else and so he agreed. They weren't strong enough to go against the entire order.

Eclipse

Eclipse was born from Sirius's heartbreak and regret when his powers went out of control. He woke with a unnatural drive to become stronger so he would never lose anyone again. What better target for these new, overwhelming feelings than the people who killed his friends?

Eclipse started to hunt down Order members. Altair discovered this and confronted him. Eclipse couldn't understand why Altair was standing in his way. He should join him instead. When Altair refuses, saying it wasn't what Skylar would have wanted and it was too dangerous to go against the Order, Eclipse decided to force his hand. He started leaving his victims wounded instead of killing them, allowing them the chance to run away and tell the Order what was happened. Of course Eclipse knew Altair wouldn't let them make it that far and he continued his little game with Altair for months, hoping to prove that Altair felt the same as he did. Altair was Sirius's best friend after all and Eclipse didn't want to lose him to his weaker half.

After a year their game came to tragic end. He didn't expect Altair to ask for Sirius's help. That stung more than his other rejections. With Sirius and Bellatrix, another of his mage friends, Altair was finally able to defeat Eclipse. Sirius tried to reason with him at the end but Eclipse refused and tried to kill him, forcing Altair to take his last victim.

<details style="width:100%; margin-top: 2em;">

→ Personality

(CW: survivor's guilt and suicide ideation)

Sirius acts more confident than he really is. Behind his polite and charismatic persona is a quiet bookworm who feels like he can never live up to his father's and everyone else's expectations.

His father's choice to give him an unlucky life bond when he was named has played a very important role in Sirius's character. His father's steadfast belief that he was strong enough to carry the burden of bad luck for the sake of the dead fuels his self doubt and guilt when he can't live up to expectations, his kindness comes from a desire to carry the pain of others, like his unlucky bond that saved his partner from becoming Forsaken, and the combination of the two helps him find the strength he needs when protecting others. Despite Sirius believing he will never be good enough Sirius is incredibly smart and he can become a confident and capable leader when he has something to protect. His honest struggle to push past his self doubt to protect those he cares about gives him a quiet kind of quiet charisma that draws people to him that he doesn't realize.

He can be a bit of a martyr though. After the destruction of Althiya Sirius is devestated and tormented by guilt. Learning the secret behind the mages, that their existence has the potential to destroy the world, his insecurities and self doubt grew to the point where he constantly wonders if he has a right to live. He hides these dark thoughts from the rest of the mages and he fiercely fights for their future as their leader should. He would prefer if he could take all the blame and sins away from the other mages and carry it all himself, even if that thought is also terrifying.

As a noble Sirius can be unintentionally elitist, like casually lamenting the loss of his giant library, however it's not malicious. He's just lived a very sheltered life and it shows sometimes. He realizes he's more privileged that most and he's very open minded and loves to learn about other's way of life.

<details style="width:100%; margin-top: 2em;">

→ Skills and Abilities

Mage

Magic is complicated in his world. It comes from a different realm and as such, it can’t exist in the real world without being tethered to a human otherwise it would be catastrophic. When mages are chosen, they slowly are transformed into a being of pure magic energy wrapped around an echo of their human self. This allows the magic to work past the limitations of the human body while also being contained. Mages are greatly enhanced by their magic and stand above normal humans. Due to their transformation, mages no longer feel human. They are similar to corpses that are kept alive by magic but their magic gives the illusion that they are still human. All of magic is fueled by imagination and mages can use their memories of being human to feel like one again, although it doesn't feel quite real, their senses feel more like looking back at the memory their imagination recreated.

Being of Magical energy

His magic side feels like an unnatural, shapeless mass of magical energy. It doesn't belong in the world and it doesn't have a form until Sirius shapes the magic into energy. It's not completely grounded in the real world. It feels like an idea instead of a physical soul until Sirius's magic gives it a physical form. Sirius can see and hear when he's connected to his magic but it feels like an afterthought, like when you see or hear something out of the corner of your eye. This gives his magic a weightless, ghost like feeling. When he gives his magic a physical form however, his blurred senses do become a bit stronger.

Think of it as tug of war with his consciousness with a ethereal pull towards his magic.

Minor Healing

Mages cannot survive without their human vessel and his magic keeps his human body alive and the magic boosts their body with magical energy. Mages don’t get sick, they have a higher tolerance for alcohol and drugs, and they heal faster than normal humans. They can still get injured, but it takes less time to recover. An injury that takes a week or more to recover would only take them a few days. However if a mage’s magic reserves are low, then there is no extra energy to heal and the boost in healing doesn’t work.

Magical defense mechanism

If his magic gets too low or his magic has to adjust due to outside magical influences, Sirius’s magical form will take over, shapeshifting him into a small animal form. It’s a defense mechanism that allows the magic to focus all its energy on magic recovery. Sirius turns into a big black wolf with starry fur and ethereal wings that glow. When he's in his wolf form, he can 'blink' short distances.

Star magic

Mages use imagination to give the pure magic they are made up of a physical shape. Each mage controls a different element. Sirius can shape his magic into starry light. His magic isn't just light, it also holds the raw energy, and speed of the stars as well, making it more difficult to control. He can't sustain his magic for very long but he can imbue his body with the speed of the stars for a short amount of time, giving him inhumanly fast reflexes temporarily.

(This works specifically with the other mages because their souls are tied to their magic and resonate with their feelings. While it was not meant to work with others I'm always open to the fun possibility. Sirius is also very new to this ability since it was hidden from him and he has only used it a couple times.)

</details>
</details>

</details>

comments
